**NEW DESTINATION**

We are delighted to bring you 2012 holidays to the beautiful island of Malta. Malta has over 7,000 years of history, is steeped in culture and heritage and with superbly sunny weather, you won't be short of things to do and see!

Malta - harbour

Lying right in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, Malta, Gozo and Comino are the three main islands that constitute the Maltese Archipelago. Malta has some wonderful beaches to enjoy, the sandy ones are mostly in the north of Malta and on Gozo. Essentially it's Malta's lifestyle that is so attractive to visitors - long seaside promenades for leisurely strolls, great restaurants for lazy lunches and the omnipresent Mediterranean Sea that lulls backwards and forwards, ensuring tranquility reigns despite the bustle found in the larger towns.

Malta - Mdina 2To give you an idea of the rich history of Malta - the Islands have been through a golden Neolithic era and periods with the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines. In 60 A.D. St. Paul brought Christianity to Malta after he was shipwrecked on the island at what is now known as St. Paul's Bay while on his way to Rome. The arrival of the Knights of St John, who obtained the islands from Charles V in 1530, was a vital landmark in the islands' history, and their presence can still be felt in the beautiful palaces and fortifications that they left in their wake. More recently Malta also played a significant part in World War II and is the only country to have been awarded the George Cross for the nation's bravery.

There are so many beautiful and interesting places explored - the 16th century masterpiece Grandmasters’ Palace, the Grand Harbour at the capital Valletta and the Cathedral in Mdina are just a few. Malta is an exceptional place to see how the past and present blend into a unique way of life. There is a pleasant mix of old-meets-new: bars in hundred-year-old houses, cafes slotted into bastions built by the Knights of St John and restaurants in seaside boathouses. It's this kind of eclecticisn that runs through the islands and their people and you can certainly look forward to meeting a myriad of characters during your stay. The Maltese people are friendly and mostly English speaking.

Away from the hustle and bustle of village cores, the Maltese Islands offer various natural spots to be discovered and admired, some left almost untouched by the 20th century.

Host Ministry Couple: 30 March - 16 April & 10-27 October 2012

We are delighted that Alex and Trish Slater will be our host ministry couple in April and October having already been in Cyprus with Richmond in 2011. Here is their profile:

Trish and Alex have now retired and moved from the fishing village of Kilkeel, in the Kingdom of Mourne at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, to Derbyshire, to be nearer the family. Alex was born and grew up in Peterhead in the north of Scotland and met Trish when she was holidaying in Scotland,Alex & Trish Slater. from her home in Croydon. They saw each other only five times before they got married! They have two daughters and five grandchildren.

They worked for the Fishermen's Mission for 45 years and have served in various ports around the British Isles and have also worked at the Lighthouse Seaman's Centre in the Falkland Islands. They have dealt with many tragedies, where lives have been lost at sea, and continued caring for and supporting these families for as long as help was required. For this work, Alex was recently awarded the MBE in the Queen's New Year' Honours list.

Alex was brought up in the Exclusive Brethren, and has quite a story to tell. Trish was sent to the local Sunday School, with other kids from her street, and trusted Christ as her Saviour at 13 years of age.

Alex has been involved with the Northern Ireland Hospital Chaplaincy team and hopes to become involved in Chaplaincy work in their new area. In his spare time enjoys photography and art. Trish has been involved in various Ladies Ministries and also organised the local fishermen's wives, as a branch of AKTEA, the European Women in Fisheries Organisation, which involves conferences around Europe, which she hopes to continue. For relaxation she enjoys swimming, crafts and art.

For both Trish and Alex, this is s time of change as they settle into a new area and seek God's will for their lives.
